Bt (bacillus thuringiensis) brinjal
The pest-resistant variety of brinjal has been developed by Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco) in conjunction with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, Karnataka. Mahyco used a gene isolated from a soil bacteria called bacillus thurin giensis along with two other genes to develop Bt brinjal. US multinational Monsanto has used the same gene to produce pest-resistant Bt cotton. Monsanto and Mahyco had formed a 50-50 joint venture called Mahyco Monsanto Biotech India to market GM cotton
